Why Are Teachers Important (Originally Posted on the BYU McKay School Blog)

Last week, I gave my class the assignment to answer the question "Why are teachers important?" in a piece of writing. They had free choice on length, format, etc. I read through all 30 and narrowed it down to the top 5. My class then voted on the 1st, 2nd, and so on places. Here are their pieces (edited for grammar):

5th place - Why Are Teachers Important?
I think that teachers are important because they help you learn. My 3rd grade teacher said that teachers just pull things out of our minds, another thing she said is that everything teachers say are important. Teachers can help you learn like at the beginning of the year, I didn't know how to do division, and Mrs. Lyon taught me how. Teachers pull things out of students' mind and put things in students' mind. Another reason is that teachers help kids understand the importance of being kind and helpful, at least that's what Mrs. Lyon taught me. Now you know why I think that teachers are important.

4th place - Why Teachers Are Important
Teachers are important for many things. I someday want to be a teacher but it's a big responsibility. My teacher Mrs. Lyon has 32 kids to watch and it's hard to watch 32 kids and here's reasons why they are important. They help us with learning. They help us learn to clean up after ourselves. They say important things to help us learn. And give us help. Teachers are very important.

3rd place - No Title
Teachers are important because they help us learn new things that help us in life, like math, writing, and the alphabet. Teachers help stop fights and bad things, teachers help set examples for kids and help them to do better things, so they learn not to do the mistakes they made before so they can be happy and make new friends.

2nd place - Why Are Teachers Important?
Teachers are important because they are like mothers. They know what is best for you. Teachers were kids too! They know what we like. Teachers are important. What if the teacher said something very important like a fire drill. We would think it's real. Teachers are very nice to want to teach kids like us. Teachers went to college to teach us. We should be grateful for them. You must respect teachers. Do you think they want to be here all day? No, they want to go home and relax. So we should listen, watch, and respect them. I like teachers. Teachers want you to be smart. To them as soon as you step in school they know you are going to be awesome. And teachers are like math super heros. That is why they came to school, to teach you and help you so when you grow up you will look back and say teachers are most important. Teachers give you your future. Good education, good job, good money, good future. That is why I treat teachers with respect. I love teachers.

1st place - Why Are Teachers Important...
Because teachers don't just come to sit at school, they come to teach kids. They come to teach math and P.E., music and art and science. And to teach us our purpose in life so when we grow up we don't just watch T.V. in our parents' house! Because in life we need a job or we won't have money or a house! When teachers come to school they come to teach us. So we can learn! NOT so we have fun, well sometimes it is fun but sometimes we need to step out of our comfort spot and try something new! And it is like they always say, a person who never made a mistake never tried anything new in life. They stuck to the same thing their whole life. And that is not good!!!!

All I can say is this--I am so glad I chose to be a teacher and I am so grateful to have had the most amazing class for my first (and last) year of teaching! :)
